The X server frequently deals with SIGIO and SIGALRM interruptions. If process execution is inside certain blocking system calls when these signals arrive, e.g. with the kernel blocked on a contended semaphore, the system calls will be interrupted. Some system calls are automatically restartable (the kernel re-executes them with the same parameters once the signal handler returns) but only if the signal handler allows it. X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows,
which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program
can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server
(or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager,
which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons
and draggable titlebars and borders.
