I really don't think this was ever correct, but I'm also not sure what non-Linux Unix this was meant to enable. The only one I know of was OS/390 / z/OS / OpenEdition, but I think that was big-endian too. At any rate this is all about to go away, so this is just removing an edge case. X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows,
which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program
can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server
(or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager,
which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons
and draggable titlebars and borders.
