The cursor code would destroy the buffer as soon as the cursor is unrealized on X11 side. Yet, the Wayland compositor may still be using the buffer as long as a released callback has not been received. Increase the reference counter on the pixmap to hold a reference on the pixmap when attaching it to the surface and use the new pixmap release callback mechanism to release that reference when the buffer is released. X Server
The X server accepts requests from client applications to create windows, which are (normally rectangular) "virtual screens" that the client program can draw into.
Windows are then composed on the actual screen by the X server (or by a separate composite manager) as directed by the window manager, which usually communicates with the user via graphical controls such as buttons and draggable titlebars and borders.
